How many times have you been shocked to find out how much a procedure costs after you’ve been treated and received the bill? For me, it’s been every time because there haven’t been tools available to help me understand the cost of the procedure ahead of time.
Two questions I never thought to ask:
- Should I sign this paper that says I am responsible for the bill before I even have an estimate of what that charge might be?
- Should I go to the facility affiliated with my doctor’s office/hospital or is there another facility in my area that meets my quality standards and offers the test for a cheaper price?
Once I asked these questions, the healthcare pricing problem was glaring! I knew I had to get to work on a solution.
The Solution: Healthcare Price Comparison Data & Tools
This past summer, we hired a “street team” of sorts to call facilities and request prices for diagnostic tests in all major U.S. markets (see related post, Why Can’t I Find Out How Much My Healthcare Really Costs?). What we have now is a database that includes facilities and prices for the most common diagnostic tests including Colonoscopy, CT-Scan, Echo, MRI, Mammogram, PET Scan, Ultrasound and X-Ray.
The Diagnostic Test Price Comparison Tool is available for MyHealthandMoney.com members. I’ve included some sample data below so you can see how the information is presented and the significant variation in price. This is real data – we just changed the facility names.
