Ballet Arizona Announces New Accessibility System
By Claire Natale - Thursday Aug 11, 2022
Ballet Arizona, the Valley’s only professional dance company, is proud to announce that its in-studio theater, Dorrance Theater, will be installing OTOjOY, an assistive hearing system that will be set-up for its 2022-2023 season.

This OTOjOY system will further support the Arizona community by improving audience and patron experiences for programs that happen at Ballet Arizona’s Dorrance Theater, including Ballet Arizona’s Performance Hour events, Studio Spotlight performances, and many more opportunities.

OTOjOY utilizes a hearing loop to provide auditory assistance to individuals who are hard of hearing by connecting with personal cochlear implants, traditional hearing aids, or with telecoil-enables smart earbuds.

“We are very excited to be expanding our accessibility systems here at Ballet Arizona with OTOjOY in order to be able to make ballet an art form all community members can enjoy,” said Claire Schmaltz, Ballet Arizona’s Community Engagement Manager. “This is just one of many steps that Ballet Arizona will be making to help make the arts more accessible to all of Arizona.”

It is estimated that 1.7 million Arizonans experience hearing loss. The OTOjOY assistive hearing system will be a large part of increasing accessibility efforts at Ballet Arizona. In addition, Ballet Arizona has also incorporated sign language interpretation for Studio Spotlight, Ballet Under the Stars, Student Matinees, and Pre/Post Performance Chats.

The installation of OTOjOY is made possible through the generous support of the Arizona Community Foundation.
